Moving forwardIt's important to know that everyone's brain works differently, and there's no correct way for the brain to function. There remains a controversial debate whether people with neurodiversity should be referred to as people "disorders" rather than unique individuals. The word “disorder” implies that there is an issue that needs to be fixed although the term neurodiversity means that we should embrace our differences. On the other hand, some people say that diagnoses can help neurodivergent individuals understand themselves better, bringing acceptance and improved self-esteem. Nevertheless, it is good to remember we should not label people based on the names of their neurodevelopmental disorders/disabilities. There are many successful people including scientists, CEOs, and celebrities, who publicly of adderall without prescriptions suffer from addiction. When addiction is developed, it is hard to go off of it due to its severe withdrawal symptoms and external help such as admission to a rehabilitation facility might be needed. Because of the illegal use of adderall, many people who actually need the medication are stigmatized for the use. Another concern in society is gender bias in psychology and psychiatry. It was thought that neurodevelopmental disorders, especially ADHD were for young boys before, however, many recent research shows that both male and female can have neurodiversity but they exhibit their symptoms differently. Oftentimes, girls with neurodiversitystill do well in school both academically and socially for many reasons. One of them being that their symptoms are less obvious than their male counterparts. For ADHD specifically, many studies show that girls tend to develop inattentive symptoms whereas their male counterparts tend to develop more hyperactivity symptoms. Therefore, girls are less likely to get diagnosed. For example, girls with ADHD show more inattentive symptoms, and many of them do not cause disturbance in class so that the teachers do not suspect that they have ADHD. Also, many psychological diagnoses are based on male behaviors instead of female behaviors. Furthermore, girls and women are good at masking: hiding their symptoms. Women in general are expected to read the room and act socially in our society. Many women who have ADHD and ASD may subconsciously force themselves to fit into their gender role in order to succeed in school, work, and home. It is important to note that neurodivergent women being good at hiding their symptoms does not mean they are not suffering; in fact, neurodivergent women are more likely to suffer from mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety than their male counterparts. disclose their neurodiversity. This means that having neurodevelopmental disorders/ disabilities or being neurodivergent should not deter people from success and stop them from chasing their dreams. However, it is important to keep in mind that the way neurodivergent people’s brains work can significantly differ from their neurotypical peers, so that extra accommodation might be necessary. Understanding their challenges they may face in their everyday lives and not assuming what they can or cannot do based on the names of the neurodevelopmental disorders/disabilities are imperative. Many successful neurodivergent people account their success to their neurodevelopmental disorder /disabilities, so cherishing the gifts they have and not blaming them for having difficulties with “easy" and “simple” tasks may help them thrive in society. 4
