FOMO and JOMO FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is a significant social factor in the relationship between social media and mental health. The constant fear of missing out on social events, experiences, or opportunities can increase anxiety and stress. Students may worry about being left out or not being included in social activities, which can negatively impact their overall happiness. FOMO can reinforce the sense of not being able to participate in social events or activities, leading to feelings of social isolation and exclusion, potentially affecting mental health. Contrasting with FOMO is the emotion known as JOMO (The Joy of Missing Out). JOMO represents a different psychological response to social media and social situations. JOMO focuses on concentrating on one’s own time and interests without being caught up in comparison or competition with others, aiming to find peace of mind. Social media often presents a filtered and idealized version of people’s lives, making it easy for students to compare themselves with others. This can lead to students constantly measuring themselves against unrealistic standards set by others, resulting in feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, and potentially leading to depression. Moreover, social media platforms use algorithms to prioritize content based on engagement metrics. As a result, students may feel pressured to constantly seek approval and validation through their online
