Causes of Colon Cancer Colon cancer develops in the colon (including the colon, rectum, and anus). It is often found in the sigmoid colon and rectum, where stool stays for a long time. The number of people with colon cancer is increasing, and it has become the second leading cause of cancer deaths, surpassing stomach cancer. The risk of colon cancer increases significantly after the age of 50. Risk Factors for Colon Cancer Lifestyle-related risk factors for colon cancer include lack of exercise, insufficient intake of fruits and vegetables, obesity, and alcohol consumption. The number of deaths from colon cancer has increased by 1.5 times over the past 20 years, with Westernized lifestyles (high-fat, low-fiber diets) being considered a major contributing factor. My Hypothesis: Why is the Rate of Colon Cancer Higher in Japanese People? The ancestors of Japanese people primarily ate natural fermented foods (pickled vegetables, natto, miso), rice, beans, vegetables, and fish. Our bodies are formed from what we eat. In the West, carbohydrates like wheat, corn, potatoes, dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt), and red meat have traditionally been consumed. Therefore, our intestines have evolved to absorb nutrients from rice and fermented foods and have been inherited through genetics. However, after World War II, Western culture was introduced by MacArthur, and now it is common to consume imported wheat-based bread, pasta, and red meat. Especially, imported wheat with high pesticide usage can disrupt intestinal environments. I believe these dietary habits are major causes of colon cancer. What We Can Do: Efforts for Intestinal Health Benefits of Intestinal Health1.Weight Loss: Improving intestinal health cansupport weight loss by enhancing the gut environmentand lifestyle. There are “fat bacteria” and “slimbacteria,” and having more beneficial bacteriaincreases the number of slim bacteria, leading toeasier fat burning.102.Immune Support: The gut is known as the largestimmune organ. About 70% of the cells and antibodiesthat fight viruses are thought to be in the gut.3.Reduction of Allergic Reactions There are three main types of bacteria in the gut. The gut microbiota, which consists of various intestinal bacteria, forms the “intestinal flora.” These intestinal bacteria are broadly classified into beneficial bacteria, opportunistic bacteria, and harmful bacteria. Improving the balance of these bacteria is crucial for maintaining a healthy gut environment, contributing to both broad and specific “gut health.” However, it is not necessarily good to have zero harmful bacteria; a diverse balance of bacteria is important. Starting Gut Health Today (Food Edition) Natural fermented foods: Natto, pickles, miso, yogurt. Their feed:1.Seaweeds: Wakame, nori, and aosa are also rich iniron, providing double benefits.2.Vegetables: Mushrooms, onions (water-solublefiber).3.Root vegetables: Sweet potatoes, apples, bananas(oligosaccharides). These are prebiotics, which are components that serve as food for beneficial bacteria in the gut. Prebiotics include dietary fibers and oligosaccharides found in vegetables, fruits, seaweed, beans, and grains. These fibers and oligosaccharides are not absorbed in the small intestine but reach the large intestine, where they are broken down by beneficial bacteria into short-chain fatty acids, maintaining a mildly acidic gut environment and promoting beneficial bacteria activity. I have been practicing gut health for three years. Three years ago, I had weak tonsils and contracted streptococcal infections three times a year, and my doctor recommended surgery. Thanks to gut health practices, I now get sick less frequently and feel much healthier. It is important to observe and listen to your body, as it changes daily. I recommend paying attention to your body’s signals. I hope this article helps spark an interest in health for everyone.
