••13 Hello! I’m Daiki Wakabayashi, a student at Goethe University. It’s been almost a year since I started my life in Germany. When I look back, I recall going through many processes such as finding accommodation, registering at the town hall, and signing up for insurance. Among these, health insurance is one of the most important elements in ensuring a safe study abroad experience. In many countries, including Germany, you cannot apply for a residence permit without health insurance. Without insurance, you could face enormous medical costs in the event of illness or injury, which could seriously affect your life as a student. This time, I would like to take a closer look at the health insurance systems for international students, focusing on the differences between Germany and Japan. In Germany, it is legally required for international students to have health insurance, which is an essential condition for obtaining a visa or enrolling in a university. Students can choose between public health insurance In Germany, all citizens are required to enroll in GKV. This system ensures equal access to medical care by paying premiums based on income. GKV is managed by public or private companies known as Krankenkassen, and students can choose from these insurance providers.•Eligibility: The main conditions are that the student mustbe enrolled in a German university and be under the age of30.If you are over 30 or have been enrolled for more than14 semesters, you may not be eligible for public insuranceand will need to opt for private insurance. Medical historyis not considered when applying for GKV.Premiums: The government determines the premiumbased on individual income. For students without personalincome, it is calculated based on the official living costsfor students in Germany (€992 per month). The monthlypremium for students is typically around €110.Coverage: GKV covers most medical services such asgeneral practitioners, specialists, hospitalization, surgeries, vaccinations, and 90% of the cost of prescription drugs. This coverage may also extend beyond Germany, withinEurope. Dental care and mental health services are(Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV) and private health insurance (Private Krankenversicherung, PKV), each with its characteristics and coverage. Below is a detailed explanation of these insurance systems:covered under certain conditions. GKV is often limited to public hospitals, where the quality of care is similar to private hospitals, however, waiting times for non-emergency cases can be long, sometimes months.Daiki WakabayashiGoethe University Health Insurance System for International Students in Germany Public Health Insurance (GKV)Health Insurance Systems for International Students in Germany and Japan
