2 Japan's healthcare system is based on universal health insurance, ensuring all citizens have equal access to care. However, its sustainability is increasingly inquestion due to the aging opulation and declining birthrate, which are expected to raise the burden on the working age population, especially the younger generation. A review of intergenerational balance is urgently needed. The COVID-19 pandemic also exposed various issues through international comparisons, highlighting how Japan’s response differed from others. Learning from these global responses offers valuable insights for future system improvements. Moreover, in Japan, public input—especially from young people—is rarely reflected in healthcare policy discussions, despite their role in sustaining the system. Against this backdrop, there is a growing desire among the youth of Generation Z to “learn more about the healthcare system and express their own views." We have therefore launched “The NewZ,” a newsletter by Japanese university students studying abroad starting in 2022. In this project, students studying abroad will report on the differences between their respective destinations and Japan's healthcare systems, as well as distinctive initiatives. The reports are produced in a bilingual format (Japanese and English) and published monthly. The title “The NewZ” means not only “news” about healthcare, but also represents the will of Generation Z to engage with social issues from their own perspectives. The planning, writing, editing, and all other processes are carried out by students themselves, emphasizing the realistic viewpoints and independence of young people. We hope that this newsletter will help the new generation to better understand and be interested in Japan's healthcare system, and to think about the future of healthcare from a global perspective. "The NewZ” supports Generation Z's steps toward connecting with society and creating the future through the theme of healthcare.About The NewZ
